Interesting facts

The interior of the Basilica is impressive - the altar of Veit Stoss is considered one of the most important and the most magnificent late gothic works that could be admired only during the biggest holidays. The altar was closed for everyday church services.

Today, the solemn opening of the altar takes place every day at 11:50. The vault covered with stars was painted by Jan Matejko himself with the help of students of the Academy of Fine Arts (including young Wyspiański, who also designed stained glass windows).

Two towers of St. Mary's Church

Do you know the legend? The two brothers were building towers of St. Mary's Church. At one point, the one of the elder began to tower over the younger broher's one. His jealousy led him to a terrible crime - he killed his older brother so that he could enjoy the glory after building the towers. Now his tower was higher, and the tower of the murdered brother was covered with a dome. When the construction was over, his guilty conscience would not give him any peace. He climbed up to his "higher" tower, confessed his sin holding a knife to which he committed fratricide and then he threw himself out of the tower.

Another legend related to the legend about St. Mary's Towers is the fact that supposedly the knife, which the jealous brother used to commit a crime, is now hanging in the Cloth Hall.
