They include the newly overhauled beautiful and unique tramcar C - a symbol of Poland’s revival following the restoration of independence.

The Trams at ul. św. Wawrzyńca exhibition is on show at the historic first depot of theKrakow standard-gauge tram which is over a century old. The space itself is worth a look as it provides a superb natural setting for the exhibition *.
From 10 November historic tramcars from the collection of the Museum of Urban Engineering and the Municipal Transport Company are on show in the spacious, historic interior of Hall F. The first Polish tram, C-type motor tramcar is worth particular attention. Can a historic vehicle become a symbol of Polish technical solutions and of Poland’s revival following the restoration of independence? Yes, of course it can as historic technical artifacts speak about history, while engineering successes frequently turn out to be breakthroughs which set new development trends. Especially so if their story is as
fascinating as that of type C motor tramcar number 260. After the end of the First World War and the restoration of independence in Poland, the country was in ruins as was the public transport system in the capital city of Warsaw.
This was due to the policy of plundering and destruction of the partitioning powers. Meanwhile, tram lines were constantly being expanded, so new rolling stock was urgently needed. Thus, in 1925 the Warsaw company Tramwaje Miejskie (Municipal Tram Company) placed an order with Lilpop, Rau and Loewentein for the production of thirty motor tramcars. The factory was Polish and only several years earlier they had managed to resume partial operation which allowed them to begin production. This was one of the first big orders which was symbolic as the Polish industry was rising from
ruins and spreading its wings. Type C trams remained in operation in Warsaw until 1956. Unfortunately, only two of
them have survived to our times. Today they are not just historic, but also unique. One of them is in the collection of the Museum of Urban Engineering. Due to its poor technical condition, its overhaul required huge funds. It was successfully completed as part of an EU project *. It was the largest and most expensive restoration project in the history of the museum to date. The restoration of tramcar C has recently finished and it is now a jewel in the Museum's collection. This exhibition provides the first opportunity for visitors to see it.

The most valuable of the other historic vehicles include: the 1910 SN4 motor tramcar brought to Krakow in 1941 from Eberswalde (Germany) where the tram lines had closed. It is the only surviving vehicle of its type.

  • the 1909 PN3 trailer, one of 20 brought to Krakow in 1941 from Nuremberg.
  • the 1930 Ring motor tramcar, originally from Gdańsk, one of the two surviving examples.
  • the 1938 SN2 motor tramcar, the only surviving copy of the last type of tramcars delivered to Krakow before the outbreak of the Second World War.
